TRIFFID ACOUSTICS – ACOUSTIC SONGS TO KEEP YOU GOING EVERY WEDNESDAY

JAI RAY SPARKS

When I was 14 I was playing in my first punk band called The Flat Batteries, we were really terrible. I walked into my favourite record store on Elizabeth St in Brisbane City called Skinny’s Music and they were playing a record by an artist named Billy Bragg. I’d never heard of him before and it immediately caught my attention. I used the $28 I’d saved up from slicing bread for month after school at the local bakery and my $2 for the bus home and bought it for $29.95. It was everything I loved about music, he wasn’t a great singer he was pretty average on guitar but his songs made you feel something and they’d suck in your head for days. As I walked towards the Victoria Bridge home (as I’d used my bus money on the album) I decided I was determined to learn how to write songs like this. I’ll never forget this day as I was asked by three junkies for some change and I gave them my remaining 5 cents and then they proceeded to follow me, rough me up and try to throw me over the side of the bridge and steal my bag and my broken nokia 3210. I think the fact they didn’t end up stealing my bag with my new Billy Bragg record in it made me appreciate the album all that much more. I still play in a punk band called The Strums and I’m still trying to write songs as good as Billy Bragg’s.
