What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about music from the 1980’s? Big Hair? Check. Tight Pants? Well, duh. Pyrotechnics and big rock ballads where they do that ‘water on the snare drum’ thing? Yes and yes. But great, old fashioned awesome songwriting? Yeah. Like, totally.

Songs in the 80’s never get the cred that the ‘songs of a generation’ in the 1960’s get. Instead it gets written off as being all pastel suits, bombastic music production and over the top music videos. Mainly because it was all pastel suits, bombastic music production and over the top music videos. But under all the hair spray and day glo there were some absolutely cracker songs. You just need to strip away the excess to find the tacky gold plating below.

That’s exactly what we are seeking to do with Under The Radar – 80’s. Five of Brisbane’s most loved songwriters and performers will will wade through the shallow waters of denim vests and pointy guitars to bring you shockingly beautiful renditions of songs you’ve heard a million times but have never really ‘listened’ to. Except maybe that one time in Nimbin.

Each artist will put their spin on six AM Radio classics over the course of two hours, and we’ll force them to justify their bad life choices and Blue Light Disco fashion faux pa’s one song at a time in the round. Unfortunately due to budgetary restraints, there will be no fireworks or tigers on stage but we will ensure that each artist has the brown M&M’s removed from their rider.
