SS.Sebastian is the musical project of Brisbane-based singer/sound-maker and multi-instrumentalist, Brett Harris. Equal parts indie and electro-folk, his compositions have been described as gritty, minimal and melancholic.

SS’ distinctive melodies are shades of Elliott Smith, Sufjan Stevens and Jeff Mangum. His songwriting
is deeply personal, yet familiar enough to find support through radio and television across the country, including a 2014 feature on the Australian TV drama series Offspring (with the song Bury Me).

Starting his career with Brisbane folk-rock septet ‘The Good Ship’, SS.Sebastian contributed to
3 studio albums as well as a string of successful tours and festival performances (including Falls Festival; Woodford Folk Festival; Canadian Music Week) both nationally and internationally.

In late 2014, SS.Sebastian shared his first ‘demo’ release—the looping chorus of Flesh & Blood & Bone, featuring New Zealand artist Lisa Crawley—for inclusion on the limited release compilation Australian Artists for Asylum Seekers (Produced by Lindsay Phillips & Myles Mumford) raising funds for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in Melbourne, Australia.

Shortly thereafter, in association with MKA’s Neon (Melbourne Theatre Company), and Brisbane Festival, SS began composing music and soundtracks for theatre, while continuing to develop his new project on the Melbourne indie circuit. During this time, he also contributed performances to the studio album Blend and Spill by Melbourne Americana musician Ayleen O’Hanlon.

Returning to Brisbane in Autumn 2015, SS.Sebastian shared a follow-up release: Sun – the second self-produced recording from his home studio in Mount Nebo. It was within 2015 that he renewed his collaboration with Drummer and Concert Producer, James Lees (Chalk, Isis, The Good Ship, Silver Sircus) – joining the lead cast for the acclaimed concert series: Transformer (Brisbane Cabaret Festival, 2015/16, Wonderland 2016) and Ziggy Stardust (Melt Festival, Queensland Cabaret Festival, Melbourne Cabaret Festival, 2016).

2016 brought his focus back to the studio, contributing to a number of recording projects, including backing vocals on Sahara Beck’s debut album Panacea, sound-scaping on Silver Sircus’ double LP Incarnadine, and taking on a production role for Sandro Colarelli’s Carpathian Crossroads.

Earlier this year, SS released his first official single and video clip: Nightmare of 1984. Joined by a small indie choir, it is a mesmerising and fragile sound, held aloft by an anthemic bridge of voices and drums. The film clip won bronze at the 2016 BADC Awards. Produced by SS.Sebastian and Mastered by T.W. Walsh (The Shins; Sufjan Stevens; Pedro The Lion) the single was released in digital format, during April 2016, debuting at #14 on the Triple J Unearthed charts.
