Good Oak

To describe Good Oak as organic would be an understatement. Stephen Ryan, Brett Gibson and Tom Busby (Busby Marou) began the project with a shared house and a love for the irreverent side of Americana. The sublime backing of Tim Sladden, AJ Hall and DJ Syme has complimented a strong focus on vocal harmonies to create a truly unique sound.

Following a run of sold out shows to support the release of their debut EP (produced by Mark Meyers – The Middle East) Good Oak have scored coveted slots such as Bleach Festival, Oxford Street Party, River Sessions, Big Sound, Gympie Muster and supports for The Cat Empire, Mat McHugh and Kasey Chambers.

Good Oak have been back in the studio recording their debut album which will release later in the year. In the meantime they continue to earn a reputation for their determination to ensure that their audience is having as much fun as they are.

With her sophomore album, Black Cat, released in February 2015, Deena collaborated with Yanto Browning (Art of Sleeping, Jac Stone), Brendan O’Neill (Big Scary, Saskwatch) and Graham Ritchie (Holy Holy, Emma Louise), who have all lent their unique talents to chisel a darker tone without compromising Deena’s dulcet voice—a voice that transmits raw, intense emotion.

Self-styled and self-taught, independence is what sets Deena apart from the rest. Born in Japan to a Taiwanese mother and an Irish father, her musical influences are as eclectic as her cultural upbringing: Johnny Cash, KT Tunstall and Jeff Buckley.

Having started her musical journey only two years ago, Deena is already a seasoned performer. For Lone Wolf she completed she toured Australia, USA, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Indonesia. With Black Cat she took the album to Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia and around Australia receiving great reviews from national press.

Michael David Thomas

Michael David Thomas has been described as a cross between wordsmiths Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, with an honest vocal style reminiscent of the ’60s / ’70s folk singer-songwriters like Paul Simon and James Taylor. He belongs to a rare class of songwriters whose songs can simultaneously reach the head and the heart, make you laugh and cry, and reference the old while still providing a completely unique perspective.

Giving up his former life as a lawyer, Michael changed his name, hit the road with an acoustic guitar and set out on a pilgrimage. His travels took him on an extensive tour playing all around Australia and the US.

Michael’s former band, Breaking Hart Benton, made three records, including an album produced by acclaimed producer Mark Moffat (Crowded House, the Saints, Yothu Yindi, Keith Urban). Now choosing to go it solo, Michael’s first single under his own name, There Must Be Something Else, rides a delicate interplay of strings, electric and acoustic guitars and Michael’s signature twangy vocals. It’s the first single for the emotive EP to come.

In 2015, Michael signed with Airlock Records (Ian HaugPowderfinger), becoming the label’s third singing. Produced by Haug, the EP contains a tantalising mix of well-crafted melodic and up tempo songs and sparser lyrical numbers. Together, Haug and Michael David Thomas brought these ‘folk’ songs to life and captured a fresh, modern sound.

From the ashes of now-defunct indie orchestra Inland Sea comes Brisbane rock outfit DEEDS. Four years on from his prior band’s demise, frontman and songwriter Beau Lindsay found a way to ‘get the band back together’, rounding up three of his former bandmates with new songs and a new vision. They hit the studio in 2015 with producer Govinda Doyle (Angus and Julia Stone) and are now ready to release their debut EP.

DEEDS draws on the powerful indie rock songwriting of The National and Arcade Fire, but with the added punch of a QOTSA or Foo Fighters record. The result is a sound that ranges from delicate to monumental, and a feeling that will stay with you long after you’ve finished listening.
