TRIFFID ALBUM OF THE WEEK: NATURAL AFFAIR BY THE GROWLERS

October 30 – November 5

Labelled as ‘Beach Goth’; a tight combination of Pop, Surf, Psychedelic and Garage Rock, The Growlers have been producing interesting, engaging music since they formed in 2006. On their 9th release, Natural Affair, the band presents some of their most well arranged, thought provoking tracks to date. Featuring a smorgasbord of different styles, Natural Affair is a magnificent release in the band’s ever evolving and prolific discography. Each of the band’s albums have had a distinctive flavour to them prior to Natural Affair; whether it be the Surf Rock themed composition of their first 3 releases; Chinese Fountain, the band’s foray into a more Poppy, Disco flavoured style, or their collaboration with The Strokes: Julian Casablancas on City Club with Casablancas taking a front seat on production and bringing his trademark angular style to the mix.

Natural Affair however, puts the beautiful, whimsical keyboard tones and synth lines of Adam McDougall front and centre, and lends a dissonant, almost Dream Pop flavour to the album. Combining lush, dreamy guitar tones and gorgeous, full textured synths, as well as, once again expanding their repertoire of genres and dabbling in Disco and even elements of Latin Jazz at points. Tackling both the joys and tribulations of modern love as well as various other contemporary social issues; Natural Affair is a triumphant release that no fan should miss.
